North Concentrator DAF Tank

JAD was tasked with designing a take-off tank at Anglo Platinum’s Mogalakwena Mine, particularly by the North Concentrator. The tailings handling take-off tank is situated between a steel tank (marked TCO) and a concrete tank (marked TK-001). JAD also assisted with the design and draughting of the support structure for the take-off tank, which also has stairways for maintenance access to the tank and the nominal bore 800 pneumatic actuator valve.

A 3D scan and site model were produced to ensure the take-off tank and structure would fit in the minimal working space between TCO and TK-001. JAD recommended and carried out the 3D scans, as it was found after the 3D scan that the measurements obtained by traditional methods would have caused clashes and costly site modifications. A model review and assembly procedure were conducted with the client to ensure that the structure would fit and that assembly was possible in the provided space. The tank was also split so that transportation to the site was possible.

A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was done on the tank to ensure it is suitable for operation, including a worst-case scenario. This worst-case scenario would be if the tank were filled with up to 35 tons of sludge from the concentrator (TCO).
